A|c|ro|le|in [lat. acer = scharf, stechend, u. olere = riechen; ↑ -in (3)], das; -s; Syn.: Propenal, Acrylaldehyd: H2C=CH—CHO; brennbare, farblose, stechend riechende u. giftige Fl., Sdp. 52 °C, die zu Additions- u. Polymerisationsreaktionen benutzt wird.

Acrolein
 
das, -s, Propenal, Acrylaldehyd, ungesättigter Aldehyd, der leicht polymerisiert und dessen Dampf stechend riecht und zu Tränen reizt. Acrolein entsteht z. B. beim Überhitzen von Fetten (Abspaltung von zwei Molekülen Wasser aus Glycerin). Es wird technisch durch katalytische Oxidation von Propylen hergestellt und u. a. zur Herstellung von Glycerin und Methionin verwendet.
